Who says beach season is over?

No lifeguard on duty – closed for the season!

Summer may officially be over, but who says that beach season is over too?

Certainly not those who were seen enjoying themselves on the shores of Toronto’s Sunnyside Beach on this glorious Thanksgiving Day. For many, the beach is an all-year-round destination not limited to warm summer months. Autumn with its cooler temperatures isn’t a deterrent for people who love the outdoors. It’s the time of year to step out in layers prepared for whatever mother nature has in store for us while doing the activities that bring us joy.

Clearly Sunnyside Pool (pictured below) is empty, but that doesn’t stop a seasoned swimmer from doing his laps – in frigid Lake Ontario. This European gentleman is no stranger to the waterfront. Locals in this area tell me that every year he is the last person who can be seen swimming after the official season has ended. His ritual is catching some rays followed by a dip in the lake to do a few laps before basking again in the sun; the routine repeats itself once the sun has warmed him up. Apparently, now is the best time to swim in the lake in terms of water temperature. Lake Ontario is a deep lake and generally takes all summer to warm up, so he may be on to something.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!
