Toronto (November 2017) – Meat Loaf? It’s more than just ground beef, it’s a fantastical serving of pop-rock music, dance, pizzaz, strobes, creative set design, exuberance, and over-the-top performances. It is the zany brainchild of composer Jim Steinman who took one of Meat Loaf’s iconic songs, Bat out of Hell, and turned it into the theme of a rather farfetched plot line for this somewhat confusing, yet rather endearing (and on some level relatable) musical.
Confusing for its deep-reaching elements of pure fantasy, endearing for its heart-warming and tender moments, and relatable for memories of our own unrequited love, suffering and heartache, and dreams of romance and happy endings.
The 20 songs that are interwoven into the highly-charged teenage storyline are not only those that Steinmen composed for Meat Loaf, but also tunes made famous by Céline Dion, Air Supply and Bonnie Tyler.
Opinions vary on the success of the musical, but judging by the audience response and interaction, the cheers and laughter, I’d say that at this particular matinee performance, the 50+ revellers were transported back in time to an era that defined much or at least part of their generation.
Whatever the critics may say, I had a blast and loved the pure energy of the performers, and the electricity they created during this 2 ½-hour escape from our every day routines.
“All revved up with no place to go”? “For crying out loud”, “Two out of Three Ain’t Bad”!
“You took the words right out of my mouth”: You still have until January 7th, 2018 to see Bat out of Hell at the Ed Mirvish Theatre to get your rush of adrenaline.
