Cherry Blossoms – the waiting game

Toronto (April 2017) – Each year, without fail, the word ‘cherry blossoms’ is enough to cause our hearts to flutter with enthusiastic anticipation as we pay close attention to the weather reports and the stages leading to full bloom status.  Once those precious buds begin to open, the first revellers and photographers observe and record their progress.

Sakura FrenzyOn cue, we flock in droves to parks and other areas all over the city where those magnificent white and pink petals evoke such a range of emotions and traditions.  For some it’s a first-time wondrous experience and for other more seasoned visitors, it has become a long-standing family event.

This ancient Japanese tradition of celebration to welcome the arrival of spring and new life has been adopted worldwide where the Sakura trees stand; it has become quite a significant event, a sort of collective ‘right of passage’ that unites us as we celebrate this joyous occasion that seems to fill our hearts and souls with renewed energy, hope and optimism.
All About Tradition

It’s no surprise that wedding couples choose High Park for their photo shoot if they’re lucky enough to get the timing right.  The Cherry Blossoms, especially on Cherry Tree Hill and down by Grenadier Pond, provide such a pretty backdrop to mark this  special occasion along with many other life’s milestone (i.e. First Communion).

Traditions continue and new ones are made along with long-lasting memories.

It’s not unusual to see people wearing traditional Japanese dress as part of the celebration (and for the Instagram pics, of course).

Even pets are seen donning their cherry-blossom-best attire as they frolic among the trees and pose for selfies with their proud owners; they are, after all, a part of the family.

SHADES OF PINK

Much to a photographer’s delight, strolling through the park during this time of year is a veritable visual treat, a smorgasbord of colour; in particular ‘Shades of Pink’.

Seeing Pink

Spending time under the beautiful Sakura trees, either alone or with loved ones, can have a calming and inspirational affect as we sit, relax, converse, contemplate or reflect while being surrounded by nature’s beauty.

Granted, this may be easier said than done in the presence of throngs of other like-minded people all eager to absorb the ambiance, have a picnic, paint, take photos, and those ever-popular selfies (caution: be mindful not to get struck in the head by a selfie stick).

Unlike last season, this year’s blossoms did not disappoint.  They bloomed and blossomed, and were admired, appreciated and celebrated by thousands.  The tradition continues!
