Learning a language is not just mastering the mechanics such as grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary; learning a language is the ability to engage with another person on a much deeper level.
Behind every language is a rich culture with a long history of traditions, customs, beliefs and ways of thinking. The spoken word, like many art forms, is a tool of expression; it is the vehicle used to transmit feelings and emotions, to make requests, teach, share information and to chronicle events for future generations.
Language helps us to define and make sense of our world.
Language and conversation (especially over a coffee or a delicious meal) provide heart-warming experiences that bring us closer together as a human race.
As a language enthusiast, when travelling in a foreign country, I find there is no better way to break down the barriers than by saying a few words and phrases in their native language. My own personal experience has shown me time and again that by greeting people in their mother tongue, they generally feel more at ease which usually leads to a more genuine connection.
The best feeling, however, is seeing the person’s face light up with a smile. People truly appreciate hearing you speak their language, accent and all.
A little effort goes a long way in fostering positive relationships.
Start by saying Hello.
