Bright Lights – Shine On

Christmas may be over, but who says we can’t still enjoy the bright lights of the season.

So much energy, dedication and joy went into the efforts of decorating city streets and malls as well as neighbourhoods around the city.  As expected, all the hoopla and excitement occurs before the big annual celebration, but unfortunately tends to wane as soon as Christmas has come and gone.

In honour of the beautiful displays around town, I’d  like to keep the splendour going for just a little bit longer.  Let’s face it, winter can be quite dull and dreary especially on days when the sun decides to stay behind the clouds.  The warm, cozy ambiance that the lights create can continue to glow in our hearts on those cold winter days. There’s a certain kind of comfort that comes from looking at sparkling lights.

Toronto – The Hudson’s Bay traditional window display

This year, the long-standing Santa’s Workshop and the Elves display has been replaced by the new Enchanted Forest theme which brings to life 29 animatronic animals.

The festive season is not complete without a visit to the 5 beautifully decorated windows of The Hudson’s Bay department store.  For Torontonians it has become a much-loved tradition that is passed on from one generation to another.  I have not missed a year since my parents first started taking me as a child.

St. Catharines (Port Dalhousie) and Niagara Parkway

rio-lane-collageIt’s always fun to drive through the neighbourhoods to get into the festive spirit.  So many homes are lovingly decorated by light aficionados.  A real community feel (and some times even a competitive spark) is ignited when residents are inspired and motivated to adorn their properties. It sure is one way to get to know and bond with your neighbours.

One such neighbourhood in St. Catharines, Ontario, has become a popular drive-through destination.  Rio Lane is a brightly lit cul-de-sac where every house on the street participates in the decorating frenzy and each family proudly displays their over-the-top creations.  In this little enclave, their work is admired and friendships are made over coffee or hot chocolate.

Rumor has it that residents must sign a contract that they will participate in this yearly traditional event.  So don’t even think about buying a house on this street if you’re not willing to join in on the fun.

Niagara Falls

Driving or walking along the Niagara Parkway, you can’t help but marvel at the incredible light displays.

Every year, Ontario Power Generation, in Niagara Falls delights people with their beautiful Winter Festival of Lights which is an 8km route of illuminations. This year is no exception – it is magical.  The majestic wildlife displays on Dufferin Islands are spectacular; to access them you can drive around the islands (for a small donation that is collected on the way out).

If you haven’t yet seen the lights, you still have time to do so until January 31, 2017.
