The season’s festivities have officially begun.

Toronto (Nov 2016) – The count down at this year’s tree-lighting ceremony, the much-loved and anticipated 50th annual Cavalcade of Lights, was another resounding success.  Revellers of all ages filled Nathan Phillips Square to participate in the big moment – counting down in perfect unison with throngs of fellow onlookers.  At the count of 1, the Square illuminated to the sound of oohs and ahs as Toronto’s official Christmas tree came alive sparkling in its traditional red and gold that has come to symbolize the official start of the holiday season.

A sure sign that winter is on its way, is the opening of the skating rink with its brightly lit arches which that night was packed with enthusiastic skaters.  Both seasoned and first-timers  were gliding along the ice to the tunes spun by DJ General Eclectic who got the party started before and kept it rocking after the live performances.

The evening’s entertainment began on the main stage with Choir, Choir, Choir who invited the audience to a sing-along of carols.  They were joined by husband-and-wife duo Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet who sang a beautiful rendition of John Lennon’s Imagine.  Together these Juno Award Winners form a local Toronto band called Whitehorse.  Later they performed crowd-pleasing songs as the celebration continued after the fireworks.

The musical journey continued after the tree was lit beginning with Cris Derksen’s Cavalcade Orchestra which featured the Chippewa Travellers, Raven Kanatakta, Jesse Baird, Dr. Draw, Jessica Deutsch, Megan Hodge and Michael Fedyshun.  A sweet, vibrant blending of sounds and melodies took on a  multi-layered flair as guest singers Don Amero, Dan Talevski and Kiran Ahluwalia each shared the stage with the Orchestra.  This is what Toronto is all about, a truly multicultural coming together, appreciation and sharing of talent, diverse musical forms and traditions.

It was a MAGICAL evening!
